アメリカ海軍が運用する強襲揚陸艦級（LHD：Landing Helicopter Dock）で、アメリカ海兵隊の上陸作戦と遠征戦を支援するために開発された。大型飛行甲板とウェルドックを備え、ヘリコプター、揚陸艇、エアクッション艇、垂直離着陸機を同時運用可能。AV-8B Harrier II（2026年4月にて退役済みとされる）やF-35B Lightning II、MV-22 Ospreyなどを搭載し、軽空母的運用も行える。人道支援、災害救援、特殊作戦支援にも投入され、米海軍水陸両用戦力の中核を担っている。
