アメリカ海軍が運用するドック型輸送揚陸艦（LPD：Landing Platform, Dock）で、アメリカ海兵隊の遠征作戦支援を目的に開発された。兵員、車両、揚陸艇、航空機を統合運用でき、ウェルドックからLCACや各種揚陸艇を展開可能。飛行甲板と格納庫を備え、MV-22 OspreyやMH-60R Seahawkなど各種ヘリコプターの運用にも対応する。ステルス性を考慮した船体設計や高度な指揮統制設備を備え、人道支援、災害救援、特殊作戦支援にも投入。Flight IIでは設計簡素化とコスト削減を図りつつ、基本能力を維持している。
