アメリカ海軍が運用するドック型揚陸艦で、特にLanding Craft Air Cushion（LCAC）の運用を重視して設計された。大型ウェルドックを備え、複数のLCACや揚陸艇、海兵隊車両を搭載可能。飛行甲板も持ち、各種ヘリコプター運用に対応する。アメリカ海兵隊遠征部隊の上陸作戦支援、車両・兵員輸送、人道支援、災害救援など幅広い任務に投入されている。後続のHarpers Ferry-class dock landing shipのベースとなった艦級でもある。
