アメリカ海軍向けに建造された高速戦闘支援補給艦級で、弾薬、食料、補給物資、予備部品などを艦隊へ洋上補給することを主任務とする。運用はMilitary Sealift Commandが担当し、空母打撃群や遠征打撃群の長期作戦行動を支援する。固体貨物補給に特化した設計で、大型貨物倉庫、補給ステーション、ヘリコプター運用能力を備える。商船規格を活用しつつ軍用生存性も考慮されており、VERTREP（垂直補給）や洋上横付補給に対応。米海軍兵站ネットワークの中核を担う重要補給艦級である。
